Home Network problems

Problem Description

Home networks can experience a wide variety of problems. These range from low bandwidth, for example the use of 10BaseT wired Ethernet or IEEE802.11b WLANs, residential gateways with limited internal buffers and process capacity, WLAN range and internal propagation problems, and even neighbors using WLAN access points and stealing bandwidth.

Symptoms

The rate of packet loss reported by the set-top box is significantly higher than that seen at the network demarcation point (i.e. DSL modem).

Resolution

Recommend to user that higher performance in-home network is used, potentially define requirements for home networks.
